Chicago-Style Hot Dogs In Philly

Vienna Beef
In Philadelphia, the preferred topping for hot dogs is ketchup, or maybe some sauerkraut and mustard. But things are done different in Chicago. The Chicago-style hot dog is another beast entirely: There, frankfurters are topped with mustard, onion, pickle relish, a pickle spear, tomato slices, hot peppers and celery salt. It's a bit messy and vaguely resembles a salad on a roll—but we'd be lying if we didn't say that they're utterly addictive.

A number of hot dog joints sell Chicago-style dogs in and around Philadelphia. Johnnie's Dog House—with locations in Wayne and Manayunk—has them (along with a respectable, North Jersey-style potato, pepper and onion topped Italian hot dog). But otherwise, a trip to South Philly is required: Both Moe's Hot Dog House in Grays Ferry and Texas Weiners on Snyder Avenue stock them.
