The Burger Register: Philadelphia's Twenty-Two Notable Burgers

While the world thinks the only way Philadelphia knows how to treat beef is to slice it up, melt some provolone on top of it, stuff it into a long roll and torment presidential candidates for not knowing how to order it the right way, we know better. Yeah, yeah, yeah, this is cheesesteak country, but one of Philly's delicious little secrets (alongside the roast pork sandwich and amazing craft beer scene) is its killer burgers.

From neighborhood bars to soigné supper clubs, the burgers in Philly tend to be big, bold and tucked into a brioche bun from Le Bus. So which ones are the best? We've done the hard work for you and culled the city's offerings down to the worthiest 22. Each one is photographed in its natural habitat, complete with vital statistics on meat composition, patty weight, height, bun pedigree, toppings, cooking method and, of course, prices. Oh, and the Whiskey King, the extravagant new burger at Jose Garces's not-yet-opened gastropub Village Whiskey? You'll find it in here, too. When you're done drooling, check out our Burger Registers for New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco and Boston.

  • The Royal Tavern is a favorite of mine so far, though I haven't had a chance to get to most of the others notes here. The Good Dog has a great burger as well, though I'm told the standard (non-cheese-filled) is the way to go.

  • Hit the burbs. Charlies in Folson. Jack Frost in Glenside. Classic burgers. Bigger is not better. Fancier is not better. Taller is so 90's. The 22 burgers shown are mostly variations on a theme - 8 to 12 ounces, fancy bun, and exotic toppings with a lot of adjectives. I've had many of them. Some are impressive constructions and taste great. Some are, indeed, creative. But why improve on simple perfection? I mean besides building the restaurant's check average. It would be cool if Barclay Prime put in a drive-thru window, and sold their sliders by the bagful.

  • The Stephen Starr, Jones Diner on 7th and Walnut has an amazing burger served on a Ciabatta bun. Their Nachos are sinfully good too!

  • Pub Webb, a small bar on temple's campus, in between 15th and 16th on Cecil B. Moore has by far the best burger i have ever tasted. i have eaten at most of the places you listed above. Rest assured, this place has been open for maybe 6 months and no one knows about it yet, but i still travel across the city at least once a week to eat it. Who thought it would be in North Philly.

  • Good Dog has been my favorite for a while. I haven't been very impressed with the Devil's Alley Burger, and what about Misconduct? Their burger is awesome. After looking at those pictures, I realize I need a burger tour, especially to Grace Tavern, London Grill, Noble and Matyson.

  • The house burger at the Bards is amazing. 8oz of Hereford Beef, grilled rashers, blue cheese, caramelized onion, black pepper aioli, kaiser roll. Simply delicious.
