Forbes Traveler Names America's Best Street Food

We were shocked - shocked! - to read that Forbes Traveler had selected the cheesesteak as one of the best street foods in America. While its legitimate standing on the list is debatable - in Philly a cheesesteak is preferably obtained from a stand or a shop, rather than a cart (although Forbes recommends both Abner's at 38th and Chestnut and Dom's at 9th and Chestnut) and is served on a hoagie roll, never "doled out on a hearty sub roll" - the humble sandwich is in respectable company. Chicago hot dog vendors like Byron’s Hog Dog Haus get a hat tip, while in L.A. it's the dueling fish taco trucks on Olympic Boulevard east of downtown L.A and The Best Fish Taco in Ensenada that are the top picks. Not one, but two New York boroughs made the list: Manhattan for Middle Eastern/South Asian food like the marinated lamb at Kwik Meal, and Queens for Latin fare like the kind served up by the famed Arepa Lady, both of which made New York's Concrete Elite list.

  • Kyle: I talked up University City's vibrant cart scene to the author in detail when she interviewed me, but she was looking for cheesesteak cart recs only.

  • The Forbes write up annoys me a little, but I guess its a common ignorance when you don't have the right fixer to show you around Philadelphia and where to get the best street food. Everyone talks about cheesesteaks all the time but frankly, its so 1999. There are food trucks in and around UPenn & Drexel that serve your common food truck foods: hot dogs, egg sandwiches, and once, even Tacos. But don't forget across from 30th Street station there's Jamaican fried fish, Ox Tails; behind DU's business college there's some of the best chinese food. Lastly, can't forget Lannie's BBQ truck on 42nd and Powelton. You know the BBQ is going to be good when the proprietor gives you two slices of white bread when you ask for napkins...

  • Regional street eats give each urban environment their own flavour. Philly has cheesesteaks, New York has, well, everything, and hot dogs are ubiquitous. In Ottawa, we chew on beavertails, a deep-fried pastry. The restaurant scene is world class, as well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SScaldli6XU

  • Love the write-up! But wow Forbes, that's news to me that L.A. is not a big street food town.
