Guatemalan-inspired fare is coming to Germantown Avenue, courtesy of husband and wife chefs Edgar and Kim Alvarez. The former Cresheim Cottage Cafe, which suffered from tepid reviews and a road construction project set up directly in front it, is scheduled to open sometime in September; all dishes will be under $20. In addition to quesadillas, tamales, enchiladas and fresh salsas, expect to see:
• Clams with Chorizo, served with tequila-roasted poblanos and tomatoes
• Queso Fundido with black beans, tasso and roasted chiles
• Mole-Glazed Spare Ribs with corn fritters
• Grilled Octopus with lime cilantro vinaigrette
• Mitad de Pollo, grilled half chicken with achiote pumpkin and adobo, with green rice and garlic spinach
• Whole Fish, grilled or roasted with adobo and citrus, served with ancho-roasted potatoes and red onions
• Vegetarian Chayote Lasagna on a bed of lentils with tomatoes, grapes and capers.
It will be family-friendly (this is Mount Airy, after all) with a kid’s menu, but with tequilas, a “price-conscious” wine list and specialty cocktails for their adult minders.
The couple have revamped the interior of the historic building, constructed in the early 1700’s, with a Spanish-Colonial motif. Hours will be Tuesday through Sunday from 3 to 10 p.m.
