Philly Beer Week May Be in June, But March Is Still Philly Beer Month

Right around now, we’d normally be getting geared up for Philly Beer Week, but since that’s been moved to June - a move that, with all of the snowstorms, is looking quite sage right about now - we’re feeling a bit of a craft brew void in our lives. Fortunately, there’s never a craft brew void in Philly for long. In addition to the upcoming Brewer’s Plate, there are multiple beer events in March to put on your short list, including a Stoudt’s dinner at Amada, stout savoring at Johnny Brenda’s, Yards’ second annual Real Ale Invitational and a beer dinner at the Continental, which finally got around to installing draft beer after 15 years.

• The Continental in Old City and Two Guys on Beer are pairing up for a Great Lakes beer dinner on Monday, March 1 at 6 p.m. $50 per person, all-inclusive. Buy tickets online at the Two Guys on Beer site. Here’s the menu:

-Togarashi Seared Tuna on a fried wonton chip with pickled jalapeno and orange zest aioli
paired with Dortmunder Gold Lager
-Sweet and Spicy Glazed Duck with warm soba noodle and vegetables
paired with Burning River Pale Ale
-Braised Short Rib with horseradish cheddar mash and crispy onions
paired with Eliot Ness Amber Lager
-Fudge Brownie Sundae with vanilla ice cream, chocolate sauce, whipped cream and roasted peanuts
paired with Edmund Fitzgerald Porter

Amada is hosting a $65 per person, five-course beer dinner on Monday, March 8, starting at 6 p.m. with Stoudt’s Brewery. Stoudt’s founder Carol Stoudt will be in the house as well. Reservations required. Here’s the menu:

-Oktober Fest paired with Smoked Sea Scallop with Barley Risotto
-Bock paired with American “Brie Style” Cheese in Coral Form with Almond Crackers; -Double IPA paired with “Hopped” Organic Egg, Black Garlic Puree, Crispy -Bacon and Smoked Trout Roe;
-Fat Dog Stout paired with Malt Braised Venison Leg and Caramelized Yogurt
-Old Abominable Barley Wine paired with Dulce de Leche.

Johnny Brenda’s second annual Stout Brunch takes place Saturday, March 13 from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. There will be over 10 stouts on tap all day, plus oyster dishes and a traditional Irish Breakfast during brunch hours. Stouts on tap include Yards Love Stout, Dock Street Sexual Chocolate, Flying Fish Exit #1: Bayshore Oyster Stout, Sly Fox O’Reilly’s Stout, Troegs Java Head Stout, Riverhorse Oatmeal Milk Stout, Weyerbacher Old Heathen, Victory Storm King Stout, Stoudt’s Fat Dog Stout, Dogfish Head Chicory Stout, Lancaster Milk Stout. Pay as you go, no reservations necessary.

• JB’s Stout Brunch is just one stop of many on the Craft Beer Express which, for a $15 fee, will tote shuttle you around on Saturday March 13 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. to seven different bars hosting craft beer events. See more details and buy tickets here.

• Yards Brewing Company will host the Third Annual Philadelphia Real Ale Invitational on Sunday, March 21 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. with a VIP preview at noon.
The event features over 20 cask ales from craft brewers. General admission tickets are $50 and include food and a commemorative mug, VIP tickets are $60 and include a private tour and face time with brewery founder/brewmaster Tom Kehoe. Buy tickets through Yards’ website. For the uninitiated, Yards’ manager Steve Mashington describes cask ale thusly:

Cask ale — unfiltered and unpasteurized beer that is conditioned (including secondary fermentation) and served from a cask without additional nitrogen or carbon dioxide pressure — has a deeply rooted tradition in the Philadelphia beer scene and it is only natural that the brewery that resurrected this style of beer host its flagship event.
