A little divine intervention helped save last Friday’s Opening Tap ceremony that kicked off Philly Beer Week, the Inquirer’s Rick Nichols reports. Weeks ago, after the fest’s organizers learned their nonprofit status didn’t meet Liquor Control Board requirements - meaning serving beer to the public wouldn’t be permitted - Father Kirk Berlenbach, of Roxboroough’s St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church, whose flock has it’s own beer geek club, stepped up to be the event’s permit holder. Under PLCB rules, churches may obtain temporary permits to sell alcohol for church sanctioned fundraisers and events. In the end, the event reportedly netted Berlenbach’s church several thousand dollars, which it plans to use to build homes for the needy. [Inquirer]
