For the upcoming July 4th holiday, New York Times wine guy Eric Asimov takes a break from the fruited plains and turns his attention to amber waves of grain with a sampling of American pale ales, and a couple beers familiar to drinkers in these parts turn up at the top of the list. Flanked by food writer Florence Fabricant, Colicchio & Sons beverage director Matthew MacCartney, and director of operations for Epicurean Management Kevin Garry, Asimov took on 20 popular pale ales. Stoudt’s American Pale Ale, an Adamstown, PA export ranked number three on the list. Coming in behind it at number 4 was Phoenixville, PA’s Sly Fox Phoenix Pale Ale. In a similar roundup last year that focused on Pilsners, both Stoudt’s and Sly Fox made the top ten, as did Downingtown’s Victory and Harrisburg’s Troegs, both of which didn’t make the cut this time. Frederick, MD’s Flying Dog Doggie Style Classic Pale Ale, tops this year’s list of pale ales. [NYT]
