Bridget Foy, the namesake of the South Street mainstay that she took control of earlier this year, will teach students at South Philly’s Sherswood Elementary School cooking skills and healthy eating habits in September. Giving birth to a baby boy earlier this year sparked Foy’s interest in children’s eating habits and nutrition. “We’re going to kick it off with a school lunch challenge, a la Top Chef,” Foy told Grub Street. “We will present two healthy lunch options and the kids will vote on their favorite.”

The winning dish will then become one of the dishes she will teach students to prepare in an after school program. “It will be healthy stuff,” Foy explained. “Mostly things that kids can easily cook at home with their parents.” The dishes will also become the featured items on her restaurant’s kids menu. “A lot of kids today don’t learn how to cook,” Foy said. “Because parents are busy, they kind of grow up on pre-fab, heat-up meals. We thought it would be nice if we could teach them how to cook something healthy.” In addition to the school lunch and after school cooking programs, Foy will also start leading kids cooking classes at the restaurant on Saturdays for $10 a class.
