The FDA Thinks Pennsylvania Is Doing an Eggcellent Job

The words cutting edge are most likely the last thing that comes to mind when pondering egg farmers in Pennsyltucky’s hinterlands. But that’s exactly how the FDA is describing the practices employed by the state’s 3,000-plus egg producers that currently adhere to farming and sanitary methods set by the Pennsylvania Egg Quality Assurance Program, a cooperative agreement among the state’s Department of Agriculture, PA Department of Health and PennAg Industries Association Poultry Council that is intended to minimize Salmonella contamination of chicken eggs. It was initially enacted 15 years ago after a state-wide salmonella scare. In the wake of the recent nationwide salmonella egg outbreak and the subsequent recall of up to a half billion incredible-edibles, the FDA will base its inspections of egg producers on the best practices that have been adopted in Pennsylvania.
