Khyber Pass Pub Says So Long to the Little Beer Engine That Could

As reported earlier, the Khyber has given way to the Khyber Pass Pub, and save for the lack of a live music venue in Old City, all seems about right in the universe. Still it’s not all craft beer and roses at the newly revitalized pub. Unfortunately, one small sacrifice made in the transformation was putting Philly’s first beer engine (the hand-drawn pump used to pour cask-conditioned ales), the affectionately named Iggy, out to pasture, according to Khyber owner Stephen Simons. Iggy was first installed back in 1996 to accommodate Yards Brewing Co.’s cask conditioned ESB, and over the course of its tenure honorably poured beers for likes of Ray Davies, Thurston Moore, Will Ferrell, Courtney Love, and countless other Khyber patrons. The good news is, Iggy was displaced to make way for an entirely new 20 tap draught system and two brand new beer engines. Next time you’re waxing nostalgic about the night you drank yourself stupid watching Guided By Voices play under the assumed name the Burning Assholes on the Khyber’s tiny stage, pour one out for Iggy.
