On a day like today — Philly’s first snow day of the season — there are few things that can compete with the warm and fuzzy comfort that sipping a stiff drink by a fireplace can provide. For the shivering, chilly and most likely bored stupid, Grub Street has assembled a list of the best bars and restaurants with fireplaces. Off of Old City’s beaten path Sassafras Cafe serves as a fitting respite on chilly days. Low key, ample seating and an inviting fire crackling away in the fireplace makes this long-time Second Street haunt a perfect place to thaw out your bones. Click through for more.

It seems as if Second Street corners the market on bars and restaurant’s with fireplaces. In addition to Sassafras Cafe, Serrano (under the Tin Angel), Plough and the Stars and Race Street Cafe all keep the home fires burning in Old City.

Further south on Second Street, the venerable Dark Horse Pub has a fireplace, and a little further north, there’s the Standard Tap.

Center City’s Black Sheep Pub, XIX Nineteen, Snackbar, and Continental Mid-town have fires to sit and sip by.

In South Philly, James and Devil’s Den both chase the chilly weather with fires.

To the north, near Fairmount, Rembrandt’s will warm your heart and your frozen digits with its fireplace.
