Vegan Wing Bowl: It’s Happening Tomorrow

Like it or not Wing Bowl is as much a part of the fabric of this city as Mummers Parades and pelting Santa Claus with snowballs at Eagles games. Still for a place dubbed the “cradle of liberty” it’s a little inequitable, in that vegetarians and vegans can’t participate. No one bars them from entering; it’s just that eating chicken goes against the their lifestyle choices. That’s part of the reason why the Abbaye and Philly Roller Girls are hosting the first ever Vegan Wing Bowl tomorrow afternoon. The other reason? “The Abbaye’s vegan chicken wings are really yummy,” Philly Roller Girls PR maven and occasional Abbaye bartender Erica Vanstone told Grub Street. “I wouldn’t call it an anti-Wing Bowl thing. This just opens it up a little for vegetarians to participate in the ridiculousness of it.”

The vegan wings are made with seitan that’s fried crisp and tossed in a spicy, buffalo-esque sauce. Vanstone said that since so many of Philly’s roller derby queens are vegetarians and vegans, bringing the hometown teams onboard for the inaugural event was a natural choice. The team’s sponsor, Cricket Hill Brewery is throwing in swag and beer for the competition.

Contestants can sign up via the Abbaye’s Facebook page, and the competition starts at 3 p.m. Prizes will be awarded to contestants who eat an entire order of vegan wings the fastest. Proceeds will benefit the Philly Roller Girls.
