Last weekend a tipster told Grub Street a standoff between Piazza overlord Bart Blatstein and Speck’s Shola Olunloyo was coming to a head and it was coming soon. Honestly, we wrote it off as more unconfirmed Speck-ulation. Believe us, in the year since Speck was first announced there’s been plenty, and not just from us. But if what Foobooz and the Insider are both reporting is indeed fact, it would seem we were a little too quick to write off our tipster. Supposedly sometime last week after Olunloyo reportedly refused to sign an operating agreement for the restaurant, Blatstein’s Tower Investments changed the locks, and locked Olunloyo out. While we’ve had a lot of fun mocking Speck’s progress and lack thereof for months, it would truly be a heartbreaking tragedy if Olunloyo never gets the opportunity to see the restaurant he’s literally put his blood, sweat and tears in to get off the ground. Here’s hoping for the best.
