Yesterday’s bad news of layoffs at Amoroso’s Baking Co. traveled fast. No sooner did the iconic bakery, which has provided the foundation for countless cheesesteaks and hoagies for more than a century, announce that it was axing 77 of its delivery truck drivers, that rumors of its impending closure began to swell. Or at the very least, it was bound to pull up its stakes in Philly and transfer all production to its facility in New Jersey. Today there’s a glimmer of good news. Well, it’s good news for cheesesteak and hoagie eaters anyway, but in the end a drag for the soon to be on the skids drivers. According to an update posted this morning, the bakery doesn’t expect to shut its bakery. But, it’s still giving its drivers the boot. Or, if you’re looking at this from the glass-half-full perspective, offering them an “outstanding economic opportunity” to buy their routes. Sounds great! What’s next? Will they charge their bakers for the use of their ovens? [Philly Deals]
