Something tells us that the deeper we get into the liquor store privatization battle, the weirder it’s going to get. Like Dennis Hopper in Apocalypse Now weird! The latest curveball? According to KYW Newsradio, State Senator John Pippy, Chairman of the Senate Law and Justice Committee, essentially the guy who will ultimately rule on any proposed changes to alcohol sale legislation and it’s worth noting, a Republican, has come out in favor of modernizing Pennsylvania’s 620 Wine and Spirits shops over selling them off. The Chairman says the Corbett plan to get the Keystone State out of the booze business is too “ambitious.” He says he would prefer to see liquor stores made more consumer friendly, with extended Sunday hours, more realistic pricing practices and allowing drinkers to buy and ship wine directly from wineries, which sound awfully a lot like what the liquor store union representatives and Democratic lawmakers are saying.
