Unlike another well-known cheesesteak slinger who’s often accused of preaching intolerance from his Cheez Whiz pulpit, Tony Luke is spreading the word of peace and understanding to school kids with the help of food. Yesterday he celebrated what he’s calling Eat 4 Peace Day with students at Flemming Elementary School in Blackwood, NJ school, KYW Newsradio reports. Inspired by the outpouring of hospitality and kindness he experienced on recent trips to the sandwich shops he’s opened in Bahrain and Afghanistan, Luke is on a mission to erase stereotypes, purge prejudices and enlighten minds through sharing meals. For yesterday’s potluck, students were encouraged to bring foods from their own ethnic backgrounds to share with others at school. So maybe there is some hope for our beloved cheesesteak after all.
