We’ve heard it before, and we’re pretty sure that we’ll most likely hear again that Stephen Starr has plans to bring back his Blue Angel (or L'ange Bleu, if you must), the dearly departed French number on Chestnut Street that ran its course from 1999 to 2003. This time though, Starr tells Eater Philly that with former Blue Angel GM Aimee Olexy (she of Talula’s Table and Garden fame) back in his orbit, it’s all but a go. After he pulled the plug on it years ago, the short-lived Italian concept Angelina filled its void. Rumors of Blue Angel’s revival began shortly after that restaurant closed in 2005.
In the years that followed, those rumors came and went, along with rumblings of several other concepts that later materialized as entities elsewhere in the Starr universe. First came word of a Blue Angel-esque bistro (Parc), a gastropub (Dandelion) and a seafood restaurant and oyster bar (Route 6). There’s no doubt that Blue Angel 2.0 would be a welcomed addition to the 700 block of Chestnut Street, we had just hoped that plans for a tiki bar or perhaps something Scandinavian would emerge, and ultimately open elsewhere (like the old Tangerine space), before it.
