Fishing could be one of the most relaxing and enjoyable sporting activities known to humankind. But reel in the wrong fish, and you can quickly find yourself in some hot water. That’s what more than 35 anglers in New Jersey learned the hard way after a recent outing on the high seas. NBC Philly reports that officers from the Garden State’s Department of Environmental Protection went undercover on a 19 hour fishing trip that resulted in the confiscation of more than 800 fish, and more than three dozens summonses issued to fishermen for catching black bass out of season. Fines for poaching the fish, which has had its season shortened in recent years to combat overfishing, could run as much as $3,000 a piece. [NBC Philly]
