Can Bob Brady Survive on Just Five Dollars of Food Per Day?

Congressman Bob Brady, whose 1st congressional district is home to some of the state’s wealthiest and some of its neediest and hungriest constituents, is taking on Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia and the Greater Philadelphia Coalition Against Hunger's “Food Stamp Challenge.” Newsworks reports that beginning on April 23, Brady will subsist — or at very least try to subsist — on only $5 worth of food for an entire week. Why? Because that’s the average daily allowance that food stamp recipients in Pennsylvania receive. Brady accepted the challenge to highlight the shortcomings of the hunger safety net, and as a reaction to state GOP lawmakers calls to eliminate eligibility for food stamp recipients with more than $5,000 to $9,000 in assets.
