As in so many things, Oaklanders have to do it their own way. Enter Nick’s Pizza, with their tagline “Made in Oakland,” where chef Nick Yapor-Cox has returned to his hometown after some time in New York kitchens (including the pastry department at Eleven Madison Park) to create what he’s calling “Oakland-style pizza.” He’s borrowing a bit from Arizmendi, as SFoodie tells us, having learned from the bakery how to make the perfect sourdough, and he’s doing hand-spun, organic, sourdough crusts. His signature pie: prosciutto, fresh and aged mozzarella, cherry tomatoes, arugula, and Meyer lemon vinaigrette.

His pizzeria opens today at 6211 Shattuck Avenue, on the Oakland/Berkeley border near Alcatraz Avenue, and he says, “I’m serious about knowing the quality of what I feed folks.” He’s making sausages and even some cheeses in house, and in addition to seasonally inspired, more gourmet pies, there will always be basic cheese and pepperoni options by the slice or whole pie. Also, he’s doing delivery through Grub Hub, which should please his North Oakland neighbors. See the full menu here.

We expect an update from whoever’s the first to try it.

Nick’s Pizza - 6211 Shattuck Avenue at 62nd - 510-658-3903 - Open Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., with delivery from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
