‘Unexpected Bumps’ Hold Back Russet’s Potential; Wedge + Fig Serves a ‘Perfect Grown-Up Treat’

• For the first act at Rittenhouse BYOB Russet, Craig LaBan is impressed with the “exquisite pastas, charcuterie, and vivid foraged flavors.” He notes Chef Andrew Wood’s “considerable potential, and the distinguished lineage,” and how “few restaurants live the notion” of the ubiquitous farm-to-table tag “quite as thoroughly as Russet.” However some “unexpected bumps,” like undercooked salmon and a not-so-tender cut of pork, came as disappointments in act two. • At Old City’s Wedge + Fig, Adam Erace decides that borscht is not one of the stronger suits. He says that “everything else delivered,” including the “draped in nutty Serrano ham” La Mancha salad, but the cheese plates, he writes, “could use some more imagination in the accoutrement department.” The “overstuffed” John Oates sandwich, with its “uneven stack” was unable to “attain an even crispness on the panini press.” For dessert, mini cheesecake-like chevre “tuffets” are “neither too sweet nor too tangy,” and serve as “a perfect grown-up treat.” [Courier-Post]

Fish Relaunches with Small Plates and Outdoor Seating

Fish's raw bar remains intact.

Jen Carroll’s Concrete Blonde getting derailed by skittish investors doesn’t necessarily mean that Philly will go without a seafood small plates experience. Over at newly re-conceptualized Fish, which is back in action as of Friday after a brief interruption in regularly scheduled service, a new menu gives the restaurant’s namesake specialty the small plates treatment. Downsized dishes include striped bass with Linquica sausage, fingerling confit, kale, and caldo verde; chicken fried monkfish with creamy bean salad, radish, chipotle vinaigrette; and chargrilled octopus with chickpea, braised lamb shank, shishito pepper, and yogurt. In addition to smaller plates, the newly revived restaurant has larger dishes for sharing and a courtyard with seating for up to 24. Keep reading to check out the menu.

Watch a Scene of Vegan Pancakes Gone Awry From Your Sister’s Sister

In the new indie film Your Sister's Sister, Emily Blunt, Rosemarie DeWitt, and Mark Duplass play three characters in a twisted love triangle of sorts: Emily's character Iris is in love with Mark's character Jack (her best friend, and the brother of her deceased ex-boyfriend Tom). But Jack has just slept with her sister Hannah (played by DeWitt), despite her lesbian status. Got all that? Anyway, the three of them are holed up in a cabin together, and to diffuse the tension, Hannah at one point tries to make vegan, gluten-free pancakes for them. Needless to say, it does not go well.

Is Bobby Flay Moving to Philly?

Bobby Flay

Philly is already home to two Iron Chefs, Masaharu Morimoto and Jose Garces. But if rumors that Bobby Flay’s been shopping around for a condo here are true, that could soon raise the count to three. According to Dan Gross, the crowned king of Bobby’s Burger Palace was spotted over the weekend scoping out digs at 10 Rittenhouse, the swanky high rise that sits across from Stephen Starr’s Dandelion just North of Rittenhouse Square on 18th Street. It's not so far fetched. After all, he does have two of his Bobby's Burger Palaces in close proximity, and Bobby Flay Steak at Atlantic City's Borgata. But when asked about the possibility of buying real estate in Center City, Flay’s spokesperson reportedly denied that the restaurateur and Food Network star was looking at properties here. Go figure. Burritos Finally Being Marketed Directly to Stoners

It's a stoner burrito revolution!Photo: Loud Mouth

Dude: Doritos tacos and hot-dog-stuffed pizza crusts are not acts of creative culinary genius. They're food for people who have the munchies, marketed by companies that are too conservative to just come right out and say so. ("Fourthmeal" may as well just not exist for sober people.) So we've got to hand it to MTV's Rob Dyrdek, whose new line of Loud Mouth Burritos are explicitly designed for people who like to get stoned.

Reading Terminal Market Completes Renovations; Kicks Off ‘Dedication Week’

Reading Terminal Market

Renovations to Reading Terminal Market are complete, and this morning Mayor Michael Nutter and other dignitaries gathered there for a ribbon cutting ceremony that ushered in a new era for the historic market. It also served as a kickoff for a weeklong series of events celebrating the market, its upgrades and newly expanded space. The $3 million-plus project realigns the market’s Avenue D, opening it up, and creating an additional 2,500 square feet of leasable floor space to accommodate new vendors. It also included the creation of new public restrooms, moving the market’s La Cucina demonstration kitchen, and building out a new multipurpose rental space for daytime and evening events that’s been christened the Rick Nichols room, after the Inquirer‘s semi-retired food columnist.

Sandwich Gaffes: Romney Orders a ‘Sub’ in the Heart of Hoagie Country [Updated]

No word on how Romney manages to fit both his foot and this burger in his mouth.

This past weekend, while ordering a sandwich in Pennsylvania, Mitt Romney may have once and for all proven true the assertions that he’s out of touch with the majority of voters. According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, his small-town bus tour was forced to abort a scheduled stop at a Wawa in beautifully bucolic Quakertown because more than 250 Democratic protesters led by former Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell were there waiting for him. His staff quickly found another of the regional chain of convenience stores' outposts a few miles away. There, Romney did the usual politician thing, shaking hands, kissing babies, and posing for photos. Then he stepped up to store’s deli counter and proceeded to order a sub. A sub! In the heart of hoagie country!

What You Missed at This Year’s Food & Wine Classic in Aspen

If you head out to dinner tonight and the chef seems a little groggy, it's entirely possible that he or she is still recovering from this past weekend's Food & Wine Classic. The annual event, now in its 30th year, was as successful as ever. Chefs like Thomas Keller, Bobby Flay, Marcus Samuelsson, and many others hit Aspen for plenty of parties and tastings, an Elvis Costello show, and even something virtuous: an early morning 5K run. Check out all the highlights in our slideshow, straight ahead.

The food is alright... there honestly is no "atmosphere" since it consists of just an oven, two small tables and a television.
