Londoners Protest McDonald’s and Coca-Cola’s Sponsorship of the Olympics

Big Macs: Not so jolly good for you.Photo: London 2012

Just three weeks before the start of the 2012 Summer Olympics, a political movement is taking shape in London to ban the presence of major sponsors Coca-Cola and McDonald's at the games. As Time reports, the London Assembly — essentially like a large city council — passed a motion to urge the Olympic Committee not to promote sugary drinks and high-calorie food in conjunction with an event that promotes health and athletic excellence. They kind of have a point.

Steven Cook to Cook at Dickinson Square Farmers Market

Steven Cook, who is one half of the seemingly unstoppable partnership (with Michael Solomonov) behind Zahav, Percy Street Barbecue and Federal Donuts, will brave the elements this weekend to do free cooking demo at the Dickinson Square Farmers Market. He’ll be kicking it at the corner of Moyamensing Avenue and Morris Street on Sunday (July 8) at noon to show market-goers how to transform their hauls into delicious, seasonal dishes. The market itself will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Feast Your Eyes on New Works From Hawk Krall at Space 1026

Hawk Krall

Space 1026, the creative community that’s tucked away on two floors of an Chinatown highrise, is promising to bring the sights, smells and tastes indigenous to South Philly indoors tonight. They’re doing it with help from, and in honor of hometown hot dog illustrator Hawk Krall. He’s opening an exhibit there tonight of new works that will be on display throughout the rest of the month. On display will be recent drawings — most black and white — that are inspired by the everyday life on the blocks that run south of Center City. There will be frosty beers, tomato pie imported from Conshohoken, but no images of hot dogs. The opening kicks off at 7 p.m.

Zeniths: SoCal Burger Chain Introduces All-Bacon Burger (Topped With More Bacon)

The 'MericaPhoto: Slater's 50/50

Bacon one-upmanship may have reached its zenith in SoCal, even in our post-bacon-wrapped-bacon era. Slater's 50/50, the three-strong chain known for its crazy burgers, including a half-beef, half-bacon patty, is now serving a 100% bacon burger called "The 'Merica." According to ABC, the burger features a patty made from 100% ground bacon that is then topped with thick-cut bacon, bacon cheddar cheese, bacon island dressing, and ... an egg served sunny-side-up (orange you glad we didn't say bacon?). The $10.95 burger was dreamed up by an owner at a Charger's tailgate party, who somehow remained drunk enough to try to make the thing the next day. The baconiest burger on earth, for now, is available through July at all three SoCal Slater's 50/50 locations, where bacon milkshakes and Bloody Marys are served to finish you off. The bacon-less bun is the last frontier, people. Time to put those thinking caps on. [ABC]

There’s Chef Talk, and There’s HopChef Talk

“I like that I can have one serious discussion going with chefs about food. And another with other chefs mostly talking about our dicks.” Ela’s Jason Cichonski tweeting of the ongoing smack-talk between himself, South Philadelphia Tap Room’s Scott Schroeder, Rittenhouse Tavern’s Nick Elmi, Lacroix’s Jon Cichon, Le Virtu’s Joe Cicala, Stateside’s George Sabatino in the run-up to Brewery Ommegang’s HopChef competition next week. Now Open: Khmer Kitchen, Serving Prah-Hok Kateeh and Other Cambodian Dishes in South Philly

At long last: Cambodian cuisne!

While there’s no word yet of Khmer Kitchen turning out “mutant burritos” any time soon, just the fact that the city has a proper Cambodian restaurant to speak of, puts us one step closer to meeting the missing criteria that Anthony Bourdain laid down for us last year when we asked him why he and his No Reservations never shot a Philly episode. It’s too late now. That show is in its final throes, but perhaps the stars will align just right, and the new South Philly restaurant, which Meal Ticket says is now open and introducing us to “unique flavors of Cambodia” will adopt the time-honored tradition of stuffing tortillas with tasty morsels from its neighbors just in time for Bourdain to fire up his new CNN show. Until then, there’s always the joint’s pork and fermented fish sauce-laden Prah-Hok Kateeh. [Meal Ticket]

Bainbridge Barrel House Rolling Toward a Labor Day Opening

Beer and barrel

Back in April we learned what was under wraps at the forever shuttered Norge appliance showroom next to Bistrot La Minette, near Sixth and Bainbridge streets. Now we have word that the newcomer, which has been named Bainbridge Street Barrel House, is aiming for an opening on or around Labor Day. Foobooz reports that efforts currently underway to transform the deserted and dilapidated space into gastropub-y glory will ultimately result in a restaurant and bar with 24 taps, a cider list, a serious collection of bourbons, cocktails, and a menu influenced by European and Asian flavors. Mom Feeds Child Beer Through Sippy Cup

A pitcher of horrible parenting skills

A mother got busted at a pizza parlor in Phoenix after she was caught feeding her 2-year-old son beer via his sippy cup. Thirty-six-year-old Valerie Marie Topete was spotted pouring beer from her pitcher into her kid's cup. Cops were called, and she was arrested. From the sounds of things, kind of surprised she was willing to share. [AP]
