After More Than a Decade the ‘Death Valley’ of Food Deserts Is Getting a Supermarket

Nothing demonstrates priorities out of order better than the City of Chester — the veritable Death Valley of food deserts — going 10 years without a proper supermarket, while gaining a casino and a stadium for Major League Soccer in that same span of time. Thankfully, hunger relief organization Philabundance is going to do something about it. The group is giving rise to Fare & Square, the country’s first non-profit supermarket. The Inky reports that it’s going to open next spring in the former home of the impoverished community’s last standing supermarket, an A&P; that closed in 2001. Congressman Bob Brady and State Senator Dominic Pileggi helped make it happen, as did a generous donation from Sunoco. [Inquirer]
