Food Day Brings Food Trucks to City Hall for the First Time; Worms to American Sardine Bar
If it is indeed a secret, as its organizers have it billed, today’s food truck pop-up at the City Hall Courtyard is perhaps the worst one ever kept. Still, as the first effort ever to roll the mobile munch bunch up to the site of William Penn’s Centre Square, it’s pretty cool. As part of National Food Day, the Philadelphia Mobile Food Association has arranged for truckers The Mini Trini, Street Food, The Tamale Cart, and Jimmie’s Cupcakes to set up shop at the courtyard from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Each of the trucks will be offering at least one dish that highlights local, sustainable and healthy ingredients. In conjunction with Philabundance, volunteers will be on hand to accept canned food donations. Contributions will be rewarded with a 10 percent discount on lunch from one of the participating trucks.
National Food Day is a nationwide celebration and movement supporting and promoting healthy, affordable, and sustainable food. In addition to the food truck pow-wow at City Hall today, Le Bec Fin is celebrating with a three-course, $60 prix fixes menu at Chez Georges that showcases local ingredients. To help draw attention to the farmers and producers that supply the restaurant, several will be on hand to dine and discuss with guests.
Members of the South Philly Food Co-Op are hosting a vermicomposting workshop at American Sardine Bar tonight from 6 to 9 p.m. for Food Day. The program will demonstrate how worm-bin composting (aka vermicomposting) works, and each participant that shows up with their own large glass jar, will receive a free starter kit. Along with worms and compost, ASB will offer house brews with a $1 discount, plus regular happy hour deals.
