How to Help: A List of Sandy Benefits and Relief Efforts Happening in Philadelphia

Blind Pig is accepting donations.

Recovery from super-storm Sandy continues moving forward, but for those who weren’t spared her savage cruelty, there’s still a long way to go before things even begin to resemble “back to normal.” With that in mind, there are some fund-raising and donation efforts being organized around town, including some that involve chefs and restaurants. Right below, you'll find a list of benefits and donation drop-offs, arranged by date so that you can plan your calendar accordingly. We will continue to update this list as we hear about more benefits and events. As always, if there's an event you know about, by all means let people know in the comments section below.

Citron and Rose, the glatt kosher restaurant and catering company that we’ve told you Michael Solomonov and Steven Cook were bringing to life in Merion this fall with partner David Magerman is gearing up to finally open next week. A rep for Solo + Cook tells Grub that the restaurant will begin serving guests Wednesday, November 7, at 5 p.m. Based on their extensive travels through Europe in recent months, where they ate exclusively at kosher restaurants from Paris to Budapest, Solomonov and Cook have come up with a menu that they describe as “genre-defying kosher.” Zahav vet Yehuda Sichel was named Chef de Cuisine, and will oversee the day to day kitchen operations.

Jose Pistola’s to Smoke Up With Today’s Lunch Crowd

Smoke 'em if you got 'em.

Jose Pistola’s is giving folks in Center City a good reason to duck out for a quick smoke at lunch today. The venerable 15th Street watering hole is serving up some smokin' specials, including “Smoky Joe Gunn,” a sort of smoky sloppy joe; smoked hog wings, fried smoked ham shanks; bacon and beef chili; plus more. And they’ve tapped a handful of smoked beers to go along with the specials. The beers include Left Hand Smokejumper, an imperial porter brewed with hand-smoked (whatever that means) barley malts; Aecht Schlenkerla Helles, a traditional German rauchbier; and New Holland Charkoota Rye, a rye-smoked doppelbock that’s aged in used rum barrels. The beers and menu specials will be on offer until they run out.

Plans Emerge For a Casino-Hotel Near the Sports Complex

Xfinity Live! would be just two blocks away.

Looks like Bart Blatstein has some competition in his bid to become a casino mogul. Parx Casino owners, Greenwood Gaming & Entertainment Inc., have partnered with Cordish Cos., which owns Maryland’s top-grossing casino, and co-owns Xfinity Live! with Comcast-Spectacor, has thrown its hat into the ring for Philly’s second gaming license. Today’s Inky reports that the group’s plan is to transform the Holiday Inn on Packer Avenue near the sports complex into a sprawling, multi-million dollar hotel-casino and entertainment zone. The group announced this week that it reached an agreements to acquire the 10-story hotel.

Martha Stewart Basically Kills Two Magazines, Lays Off 70 People

It's a good thing?

How's this for timing? Executives at Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia — the company that puts out all things Martha — announced this week that they'd lay off 70 people from its 600-person staff. Additionally, they'll kill the recipe-focused Everyday Food as a stand-alone magazine and instead wrap it into Martha Stewart Living. The company will also try to sell another of its magazines, health-heavy Whole Living, to someone else. The moves are expected to save the struggling company between $33 and $35 million per year. “Pizza is alright”

The food is alright... there honestly is no "atmosphere" since it consists of just an oven, two small tables and a television.

Others talk the talk, Derek has always walked the walk.

When it comes to the generals...(chicken that is) they'll make you sign up for recruitment
