Neighborhood Grinds, Fred Lies and Phil Jun’s community-minded, small-batch bean roasting coffee shop on Artesia Boulevard in Redondo Beach, is opening an additional location next month on the Redondo Pier. The business, which is dedicated to spreading the merits of hand-brewing, milk steaming, and espresso extracting to its guests, is also an avid fund-raiser for South Bay non-profits like Madison Elementary and Environmental Charter High School through its own program called Careffeine, in which one-dollar from every bag of coffee goes to the cause of a customer’s choice. Along the way, Grinds is steadily racking up accolades as one of the region’s best coffee shops. An employee with the cafe foresees the opening of this second location, which will also serve solid food, in “about a month,” part of the Pier’s ongoing efforts to go from seedy to spiffy.
