Despite the best efforts of hobbits and men, Studio City’s 51-year-old taco stand, Henry’s, has served its last ground beef-stuffed tortilla. The restaurant lost the battle with its landlord, Mehran Ebrahimpour, who refused to renew Janis Hood’s leases after the second-generation owner sought Historic Landmark status for the business.
Henry’s closed after a packed Saturday service, but Hood tells The L.A. Times she is working on bringing the Henry’s name, menu, and signage to a new location with Omar Vega, a 21-year veteran of the restaurant who may eventually buy the brand.
Saturday’s final service was fraught with emotion, with customers penning tributes to the stand on a large sheet of paper and such terms as “sacred ground” and “icon” being variously thrown around. And of course, Tony Danza must be totally crushed, wherever he be.
