Pizzeria DiMeo's is slashing prices on its Neapolitan Margherita pizzas next Thursday*, March 14, letting the highly praised pies go for just $4 a piece. Ordinarily they run $13. But owners Pino and Antimo DiMeo are eagerly trying to break in their brand-spanking-new Valoriani Italian wood fired pizza oven, which replaces the eight thousand pound Mount Rainer Wood Stone that they opened with last year. Why replace such a pricey piece of equipment when its still new and perfectly good, you ask? They say its because they tested out a Valoriani oven recently, and were immediately hooked. It may also have something to do with the fact that they are in the midst of trying to meet the strict requirements for certification by the esteemed Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana, which grants special designation to pizzerias that religiously adhere to Neapolitan pizza making traditions. If they secure it, they will be the first in Philly to do so. The cheap pizzas are available all day, from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m., or whenever the dough runs out.
