Dont let the location and decidedly clubby vibe give you a false impression; the food served at Old Citys Fire & Ice, which opened in the long dormant Patou space near Third and Market streets back in January, is not an after thought. Surely a guy like Chef Chris Nguyen, whos spent the last decade or so perfecting his pad Thai recipe, is very serious about what comes out of his kitchen. He drops a new menu today, which like its predecessor sidesteps the trappings of the dreaded F-word in favor of a delicate balance of influences from Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos.
As with earlier menus, this one offers a variety of dishes broken down under headings Tidbits, snacks like cheesesteak spring rolls, Kobe sliders, and chicken satay; Soups, including a spicy tom yum, pork and shrimp dumplings, and rice noodles and chicken in a coconut broth; Vegetables, like wok-roasted bean sprouts, braised fresh bamboo, and Laotian sticky rice; Meat, grilled Korean short ribs with kimchi and sticky rice, and Asian-barbecued pork loin with steamed scallion buns; Fish, fried salted prawns, and Alaskan cod steamed in a banana leaf; and Thai Noodles, including the aforementioned pad Thai with shrimp, pork, chicken or veggie.
