Manneken-Penn Belgo-American Hybrid to Debut at Philly Beer Week; Saucony Creek Brewing Going on Tap at a Bar Near You Soon

Now seems like just as good of a time as any to take a leak look at what’s coming down the local beer pipeline. The big news is, the collaboration beer that a contingency of Philly Beer Week ambassadors traveled to Belgium this past winter to brew at the legendary Brasserie de la Senne with brewer Yvan De Baets is bottled, en route to the City of Brotherly Suds, and will debut at the annaul beer celebration’s Opening Tap ceremony on May 31. It’s been dubbed Manneken-Penn, a spoof on Brussels’ famous Manneken-Pis, tinkling boy statue. And its label (pictured) reflects that with a playful depiction of a William Penn-esque figure posed in similar stance as the Belgian landmark atop City Hall, relieving himself over flooded Center City streets. Yum, huh?

The beer itself is being called a Belgo-American Dubbel, and was brewed in collaboration with Weyerbacher’s Chris Wilson and Monk’s Cafe’s Tom Peters as part of the annual PBW-sponsored “Win a Trip to Belgium” contest. It was made with oats, molasses, American Calypso hops, and a combination of Slovenia, Aurora and Styrian Goldings hops from Europe. After its debut, Manneken-Penn will be available on draft and in 11.2 oz. bottles for the remainder of Beer Week.

While that brew is still a few weeks away, Shiner, which is to Texas what Yuengling Lager is to Philly and the rest of Pennsylvania, will soon be available here for the first time in more than 100 years. Keep an eye out for it on or after May 7 at Percy Street BBQ, City Tap House, El Camino Real, Moriarity’s, and MilkBoy just to name a few.

And finally, also making its debut are craft brewed beers from Kutztown start-up Saucony Creek Brewing Company. Last night the brewers touched down at South Philly’s Pub on Passyunk East to show off their Stonefly IPA, Bling Blanger's Brown Ale, and North Ramp Coffee Stout.
