Earlier this week, we heard about the brilliant-sounding Dog Café coming to Los Angeles, which will combine separately zoned petting and coffee-sipping areas in order to pass muster with the health department, and now there’s word of a very similar project angling to open in New York. The restaurants, which are not affiliated with one another, are both currently very short of their crowd-funding goals — the L.A. location has raised $7,000 of $200,000; here, the campaign’s creators are up to $500 of a $70,000 ask — and modeled after successful efforts with foster dogs in South Korea. As such, would-be dog-café proprietors Maggie Cee and Mandy Chow say the animals available for hugs and adoption at their Manhattan location will be from no-kill shelters. There’s no word if the coffee will be fair trade, but that’s kind of beside the point.
